Growing in God's grace

JOY - Just Older Youth

JOY was organized May of 2005 with 70 church members in attendance at the organizational luncheon and out of that number we had 35 people join and the number has steadily grown from that modest beginning. Today the membership is more than 150 members. Our group meets weekly in our Fellowship Hall at 11:00 a.m. with the exception of the fourth Wednesday. We begin each meeting with singing “JOY, JOY, JOY” followed with singing favorite hymns that are requested from the group. After sharing “Joys and Concerns” and a short devotion, we have a program that is of interest to those in attendance and then the “High Light” of the day a delicious “Lunch” prepared by a lunch team. We have a Lunch Team for the first, second and third Wednesdays of the month, on the fourth Wednesday, we have lunch off campus at Golden Corral on Millbrook Road. All members are encouraged to be a member of one of the Lunch Teams, for those who cannot serve on a Lunch Team, there is a nominal charge of $4.00 for lunch each week.

We have annual dues of $10.00 that are collected before September 1 each year. We support North Raleigh Ministries by collecting food each week and several of our members volunteer each week separating clothes and other articles that are donated to be sold. Other volunteers work in the food area sorting food that is given to the needy. We collect items for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and have sent quite a few boxes to our soldiers. This is an on going project. We also support many worthwhile organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network, Triangle Reading Service and other worthwhile organizations that provide programs for our meetings.

We are affiliated with the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department which affords several perks such as going to the Holiday Party downtown in December. Our association with the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department allows us to charter a bus to visit museums and entertainment venues in the area for a nominal fee.

Our membership is a group of smiling happy seniors and is open to anyone who consider themselves a “Senior Adult.” Members are not required to be a member of North Raleigh United Methodist Church.

Mission Statement: “JOY” (Just Older Youth) promotes Christian Love, Fellowship and Support to Older Adults at North Raleigh United Methodist Church and our Community!
