Growing in God's grace

Sunday School Basics and Questions

What is offered?
A professionally-staffed nursery is offered for infants and children through age three on Sunday mornings during all three worship services. Beginning at age three, Sunday School is offered during two sessions: 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to noon.
When is my child ready for Sunday School?
Before moving from the nursery to a Sunday School class, your child must be potty-trained. Our nursery is equipped and staffed to handle children in diapers, but our Sunday School rooms are not.
Drop off and Pick up Policy
Parents or adult guardians of children age infant through fifth grade should drop off and pick up their children from the nursery and Sunday School classrooms. If your child needs to move from one Sunday School classroom to another, or to another location in the church during morning worship hours, please accompany the child. As a courtesy to our teachers and nursery attendants, please drop off and pick up as close to the beginning and end times as possible.
My child just turned three and is potty-trained. When can we make the move to a Sunday School class?
We ask that all three-year-olds move into the Sunday School classroom on Promotion Sunday (currently the end of August). This allows all three-year-olds to move into the classroom at the same time and share in the experience of adapting to a new environment together.
My child just moved up to the next grade in school. Which class do I send my child to?
The children at NRUMC attend many different schools on the year-round, modified, and traditional calendars. We realize your child may move in July to the next school grade, but we ask that you move your child to the next Sunday School class on Promotion Sunday. Some of our Sunday School classrooms are combined ages/grades.
When does my child move to the next age/class?
Our Sunday School children stay in the same grade/class until Promotion Sunday (a date established by the Education Committee) when all children move to the next grade. Promotion Sunday is currently the end of August.
Are snacks served during Sunday School?
Due to growing food allergies among children and our strong desire to provide a safe environment for all children, we will not be serving snacks during Sunday School. We encourage parents to serve their child a healthy breakfast before Sunday School and to refrain from sending their child to Sunday School with food.
Is Sunday School offered for my older children?
NRUMC offers Sunday School for children, youth, and adults.
Special Needs?
Children with special needs are welcome in our Sunday School Program! We tailor our program to address special needs on a case-by-case basis. Please let us know how we can best serve your child!
Behavior Expectations
Our objective is to provide a safe and nurturing atmosphere for learning and spiritual growth. Our children are taught to treat others in loving and kind ways, as Jesus treated others. We know that children sometimes have “off” days. In the event that one of our children has a behavior issue, we have a standard policy that will provide consistent teaching and modeling.

When a problem is noted, the teacher will correct the child or children involved. If the problem persists, the teacher will move the child/children to another area of the room, removing them from the situation. If this is not successful, the teacher will locate our Minister of Children or Minister of Christian Education for further assistance. At no time will the child or children be left alone in the classroom.

You will receive a copy of our complete “Behavior Expectations Policy” at registration time. You may ask Kathleen Snyder, Minister of Christian Education, for a copy at any time.
