Job Opening – Minister of Children

(Full-time)

Position Description
The Minister of Children will seek to teach both children and their families the love of Christ as set out in the Bible and through the Wesley’s Tenets of Faith. This is to be a full time, salaried position averaging 40 hours per week depending on the needs of the program.  The Children’s Minister is under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor. The Children’s Minister will partner with the Children’s Council to help develop and implement programs as deemed appropriate.

Duties of the Children’s Minister shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Education of the children (birth through 5th grade) of NRUMC based on an understanding and appreciation of the United Methodist Church/Wesleyan philosophy;
  • Recruitment and coordination of a volunteer base of 40+ adults to achieve the above mission;
  • Oversight of all children’s programs including coordination with music ministry and collaboration with preschool programs;
  • Essential effective communication between all parties involved with these ministries;
  • Collaboration with all staff, especially preschool, youth, and family ministry programs, to help children continue on their journey in relationship with God as they grow;
  • Enforcement of the Safe Sanctuaries policy for every activity involving children and background checks for all volunteers;
  • Collaboration with Nursery Coordinator to schedule appropriate nursery and childcare requests related to Children’s Ministry.

Education:
We are seeking an individual with a BS or BA in Christian Education, Psychology, Sociology, Education, Early Childhood Education or related/relevant field. The ideal candidate will need four years or more of relevant work experience, experience with volunteer organizations, or experience in church ministry as well as an understanding of child development. Completion of Safe Sanctuary training will be required upon being hired.

Skills needed:

  • Passion about ongoing ministry of NRUMC and the education of its children. The ability to express openly the love of Christ is paramount. Leading by example is primary.
  • Administrative and organizational skills are necessary to be able to coordinate large numbers of volunteers as well as to communicate effectively to families in the church. The ability to use computer programs and social media is required.
  • Skills for the preparation and management of the budget to support  Children’s Ministry programs is expected.
  • Implementation of 12 or more events per year including curriculum planning, volunteer staffing, and resource budgeting to support ongoing and future programs is expected.
  • Energy and flexibility of schedule will be needed to accomplish the needs of the programs of a large congregation. Attendance on the majority of Sunday mornings will be expected.
  • Effective interpersonal skills will be needed to maintain good rapport with individuals and groups alike. The children’s minister will need to be able to motivate volunteers and provide not only verbal but also logistical support to help them accomplish their assigned duties. Being a “team player” is a necessity. Leadership skills are requisite.

Other:

  • Pray regularly and actively develop one’s personal faith.
  • Commit to invite and equip laity to serve in this ministry area.
