May We Love Alike

Sometimes I am asked how the Methodist Church compares with other churches. Of course, that is a question which would take hours to answer fully. But a short answer might be this: both former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former president George W. Bush are Methodists. In other words, we are a Church which seeks to be open to all people of all perspectives.

It goes back to our very beginning, when our founder John Wesley said, “If we cannot think alike, may we not love alike?” Of course, such a perspective actually goes all the way back to Jesus. One day, Jesus’ disciples told him that they had stopped someone from acting in Jesus’ name because he was not one of them. And Jesus replied, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.”

So, that’s who Methodists are at our best… We might not agree on everything, but we agree on this: whatever our differences, we are bound together by the love of Jesus Christ, a love which is for everyone.

And what THAT means is the congregation of North Raleigh United Methodist Church, and I, look forward to the opportunity to welcome you.
