Growing in God's grace

NRUMC Refugee Resettlement Mission

Church World Service (CWS) has recently opened an office in Durham. Their mission is to place immigrant, refugee families in Durham and Raleigh. Refugees, by definition, leave their native countries because of persecution and threat of imprisonment or harm to themselves and/or their families. They arrive to their local apartments with little but the clothes on their backs. CWS partners with local churches to help provide and furnish housing and to assimilate the refugees into our society.

How can you help?

CWS needs volunteers to help the new families learn English and assimilate to life here in NC. Time commitments can be a little or a lot, on a one-time or continuing basis. For example, you could invite a new family's children to play with your children at the park, or you could help a family learn how to use the bus system. For more information on CWS, contact Joanna Schiestl at 919-680-4310 or jschiestl@churchworldservice.org.

The mission of the NRUMC Refugee Resettlement Mission is to collect household furnishings for these families to use in their new homes. You can support this mission by donating household furnishings. Needed furnishings include furniture, beds, bedding, tables, chairs, dishes, flatware, toys, small TVs- pretty much anything you might sell at a yard sale. This is great opportunity to free up storage space at your house for a very worthy cause. Donations are tax deductible, and we will pick them up.
